Human Frailty, Golden Chains, and Icons of Leadership

During a four days stay at the Argensen Hotel in West Paris, I encountered a few icons and images of leadership from behind Paris’ medieval backdrop, in an old woman’s wrinkled face. I also saw the value of choices we make as leaders - for ourselves and others. It’s not often what you see at first…

The woman appeared at first, an image of frail humanity. After a brief observation, though, her image changed into an icon of survival and of giving back, in an odd sort of way. Intrigued, I stopped an took in more….chain.jpg

Near my seat on a blue bench at the Metro train station’s busy shops, she dropped stale crumbs into a circle of pigeons bobbing near her swollen feet. The woman’s floral dress sagged inches below frayed swatches hung from her dark cloth coat like fur sheds from elk in molting season.

Trains squealed to a halt and then chugged off again on both sides of her frail frame, as conductors called to well heeled business fare in fast paced lanes. Above her pigeons circled within the enclosed station as if to call attention to her plight.

Later, on my drive back home,  Parisian images in silhouettes of seventeenth century homes faded into the night, and marble statues and charming church-steepled slipped from view, yet I still saw this elderly woman’s bent structure in living color.

The following day I returned and she did not. Details of quaint step gables, weather-cocked figures on roofs, gabled windows peered down on sunny pavement at my little sidewalk cafes. Concerned for her welfare, and sorry I’d not done more when she was there,  I asked about the elderly woman at the market squares and I inquired from artists, who lined the streets to capture and contain Paris’ ancient beauty down through the ages. Nobody had seen her that day.

Where was the woman who owned so little,  but fed crumbs to a few trapped pigeons?  Her icon challenged me to see leadership images in van Goethe’s words … “Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.”  Her life changes choices we leaders make for ourselves and others as part of the icon in a golden chain.

Former President Bill Clinton Leads 2nd Annual Clinton Global Initiative

Former President Clinton was at his best this week as he hosted the Clinton Global Initiative. The conference, which ran from September 20-22 gathered an impressive list of world and business leaders as well as some Hollywood celebrities (never missing a chance to be on stage next to Bill). As it concluded today, the former president announced a total of $7.3 billion in pledges that will help reduce global warming and fight Third World poverty, disease and ethnic strife.

From its website,

“The Clinton Global Initiative is designed to inspire action. Every participant mustCGI logo.jpg pledge to take a specific action in one of our focus areas. These commitments have ranged from $100 million to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa, to a donation of 20,000 bicycles in disaster-torn Sri Lanka, to 100 hours volunteered in an interfaith youth group.”

In only its second year, the conference was a dazzling success. According to the Washington Post,

“The three-day Clinton Global Initiative, which attracted world leaders, corporate titans and, produced at least 215 commitments of financial support to a range of projects supported by the Clinton Foundation. Last year's gathering produced 300 commitments worth $2.5 billion.”

Sir Richard Branson was a significant reason for the increase in financial commitments as he pledged $3 billion to develop alternative energy sources.CIG Branson.jpg

To assist him in his global fight against poverty, disease, war and pollution, Clinton handpicked his invitees, bringing together some of the richest and most influential people on Earth and energizing them to take on some of the world's worst problems. Clinton is impressive in his ability to attract support and garner followers. The list of invitees included nearly 50 heads of state as well as billionaires and a variety of royalty and Hollywood stars.

Attendees gathered in support of Clinton and these important issues included First Lady Laura Bush (in photo with Steve Case AOL founder), former Vice President Al Gore, and billionaire businessmenCIG 1.jpg Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Rupert Murdoch, cyclist Lance Armstrong, CBS News anchor Katie Couric and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Clinton was clear that he was reaching out to solve world problems, something that he felt must rise above partisan politics.

"No matter what your politics are, there ought to be things that we can agree on need to be done," Clinton said. "Shouldn't there be some forum where Americans and citizens of the world can put aside their differences and find common ground?"

Clinton’s charisma, personality and commitment to solve issues draw people to him. In a world divided on so many levels, a non-partisan commitment to improve the human family is needed. The intitiative of one leader has taken a great step toward a solution

Trust and Teamwork in Leadership

I found myself at the back of a pack of cyclists the other day. I had not ridden in several months and joined a friend and his group of riders in an effort to get from behind the din of a computer monitor to enjoy the sunshine and beach scenes that are so nearby. I certainly got what I asked for and also received a healthy dose of burning legs, oxygen depletion and a sore butt.

The group headed from Irvine, CA to Laguna Beach on Laguna Beach Canyon Rd. I was the least fit and subsequently rode at the back, glad for the draft from the other riders. To take full advantage of the aerodynamic benefit of following the group, I followed within a few inches of my friend’s back wheel.

At points on this road, the shoulder where we could ride became narrow. We snaked between the vehicle traffic that was backing up and the gravel and dirt of the shoulder (not our ride in photo).

This part of the ride required concentration. It was necessary to be aware of the groups speed and direction every instant. This situation caused me tocycling.jpg consider the importance of trust in any group. I thought about the trust that every rider in this group had for the rider in front of them. I had not ridden with this group enough to know their individual styles, habits and capabilities as cyclists. But we set out together with a unified goal and clearly defined course. Each rider’s expectation was that we would all follow this objective and that the group would move ahead as one. This commitment required each of is to not only ride for oneself but for the guy behind.

It was a nice reminder of some important principles of leadership:

  • Communicate a clearly stated goal or objective
  • Draw commitment to that goal or objective
  • Exercise trust in teammates
  • Create unity in purpose and commitment to teammateslaguna.jpg

I doubt any of the other riders were thinking about these principles as they applied to leadership. They were all experienced riders and these traits and characteristics came natural to them after hundreds of group rides. That is the point we would all like to reach in our organizations. Namely, that all or most of the team has learned these principles and naturally follows them. It only will happen through routine practice and if it is part of the culture. You can establish this culture as the leader.
