Wegmans Leads Food Industries Into the Future

In today’s Democrat and Chronicle  story titled … 1st new area Wegmans in 10 years almost open … Deborah Alexandria showed Wegman’s new store opening this Sunday - in Greece, New York.

What interested me are the ten additions to average food stores that Wegmans brings to its enterprise and ways only Wegmans leads through expansion

Their top ten distinctives show Wegmans as top food chains everywhere….

1. Cross Cultures – to find excellence in each - From Asian Wokery to world class bakery to Veggie and Fish bars … Wegmans chases down the best in every culture and then its respected signature to showcase that brand.

2. Stay closely connected to their community. Danny Wegman and Colleen Wegman, the chief executive officer and president of the Rochester-based company, thank employees and welcome customers personally at every opportunity they find.

3. Take their time. The last time Wegmans opened a new store in the Rochester area was the Pittsford location in September 1997.

4. Add value to neighborhoods. This new one-story Wegmans has a two-tone, two-story façade and the first Wegmans clock tower in the region.

5. Build on the best from what they already have. 100 new staff members were trained for four to six months at other Wegmans locations.

6. Stir energy, enthusiasm and excitement among workers, and customers. It doesn't matter what role people play – Wegmans seems to stir up people’s best.

7. Bring excellence to finishing touches so that when you stand at the entrance – you see only the best.

8. Demolish the old to make room for the new. The new store replaces a demolished building that was more than 40 years old, and less than 70,000 square feet, and so limited in the products it could offer to customers.

9. Think big. The new store's layout offers more selections, more shelves, a prepared food section, a coffee bar, a sandwich shop, a Wokery buffet, a cheese shop, an olive bar, a sushi bar, a Nature's Marketplace natural foods section, a 130-seat café with some outdoor seating and a children's seating area.

10. Lead the industry. Where else would you see Wegmans’ special features … 30,000-pound, wood-fired oven, to bake artisan breads and rolls daily… a WKids Fun Center, so parents or guardians can drop off children ages 3 to 8 for an hour while they shop … A 231-foot-long mural that wraps around the rear of the store depicting farmlands, a lighthouse, the Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. Russell Station, the Rochester skyline, the Paddy Hill Library, Town Hall and a firehouse nearby.
