This week we've all seen the backlash against talk show host Don Imus's regarding his comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team. Late this week, Imus's show was removed from CNBC and a day later he was fired from his host network at CBS. While a few may argue that this was far too much punishment for Imus because he did apologize both over the air and in person, most agree it was justified.
My question is why do we need radio commentators at all? I never cared much for Imus but he's just one of legions of talk show hosts and commentators who fill the airwaves with their political and social rants. As divinely created individuals with amazing brains and deep emotions, why do we need the Don Imus's, Howard Sterns, Rush Limbaughs, Al Sharptons Bill O'Reillys, or any of a thousand morning "shock jocks" to filter and define information for us?
Think about what these folks do. They take information off the wire or out of current events and spin and filter them through their own viewpoints which usually include their own biases, prejudices, "baggage, " and personal opinions. Their loyal listeners take on these spins without any thought to why now they adapt the same opinions. When a Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh shapes your viewpoint on life, it completely discounts your own ability to make thoughtful and productive decisions and adopt your own world view.
What should you do?
How about taking time each day to fill your head with something positive and apolitical? There are wonderful, positive books out there that hold timeless principles for success and help to develop a positive outlook on life. There are plenty of good speakers on tape or CD who provide thoughts and insights on positive personal development.
If you are what you eat, how much more are we a product of what we put in our brains.
This week, let's all take some time to evaluate what goes in our ears and in our heads. Take an objective look at your commentator of choice and see if what they espouse is a positive, life-giving message. Put some premium fuel in your brain and emotions and pass those positive vibes onto those around you.
Not telling you what to do, just offering you a suggestion!
