Karl Malone Receives and Gives
You don’t have to look far to find stories about athletes that are selfish, self-centered and poor role models (find your own links). On occasion, there is an inspirational story that reminds us that not every athlete fits that mold. Joey Cheek, US Speedskater comes to mind.

This story didn’t hit any major newspapers or media outlets. It was merely a mention on a blog. Thanks to Devin at Midmarketmaven for pointing it out to me.

While major news outlets reported that the Utah Jazz were retiring Karl Malone’s jersey and honoring him with a bronze statue on front of the Jazz’s Delta Center arena, a small story occurred in the background.

The story was told by Salt Lake Tribune photographer Trent Nelson on his blog, Fly on the Wall.

Trent tells of how he and a group of press photographers were jockeying for position, like NBA forwards fighting for position for a rebound, to get a photo at the unveiling of the statue honoring Malone. In his own words….

“We're all knocking into each other with no room to spare, jockeying for position, and I hear the photographer behind me say, "No! Get that out of here!" I see there's a kid who has squeezed into our group next to me who is holding out a smallmalone kid photo.jpg point-and-shoot camera, trying to get a shot of Karl. Then the hand of a photographer comes over from behind me and pushes the kid's camera away.

Karl Malone sees this little bit of ugliness happen. He yells to the kid to come up, in front of all the "professionals," and get his picture. The kid is dumbstruck, like he can't believe what's happening. He gets in front of the photographers, takes the picture and then Karl goes a step further. He hands the kid's camera to one of the photographers and has the pro take a picture of the kid standing with Karl.”

Great leadership Karl. Great photo and story Trent. Enough said.
