USC, ranked number one, bringing two Heisman winners and more than a couple of potential first round draft choices and a 34-0 record taking on Texas, ranked number two, 19-0 record, Big 12 champs and a Heisman runner-up. Both schools came in averaging over 50 points a game.
Rarely do 1 vs. 2 match-ups live up to their hype. But last night the Rose Bowl delivered nothing less than was promised. Many of my fellow Southern Californians are mourning the loss of the USC Trojans (UCLA fans excused) after three years of domination, 34 straight wins that is. But no can argue that it was one of the best bowl games in maybe forever. The game was a magical display of leadership, historical individual performances and solid coaching.
With 19 seconds left, Texas proved itself a national champion and worthy winners as Vince Young scored his third touchdown and capped an individual performance that has few equals. The Longhorns were led….no carried, by Vince Young. Young accounted for nearly all of Texas’ offense. He passed for 267 and he ran for 200 yards. More importantly, when it came to crunch time, his team, his coaches, the Texas fans all looked to Vince. He wanted the ball. He showed the leadership.
The finish was amazing because as Texas had the ball with two minutes left, you could feel it. Everyone knew Vince Young would have the ball and yet no one on the field could stop him. He was in charge. His confidence unwavering and his talent equal to his confidence. He kept his cool and swagger, just as he had all season, then delivered the win.
